The 50 Best Tweets of 2023

For the last five years, I’ve put my social media addiction to good use, compiling a list of the best tweets of the year. Sharing that list is always a fun time, with plenty of laughs had all around.

At times in 2023, it looked like I might not get the chance to make that list again.

Late in 2022, Twitter was sold to rich man and noted butthead Elon Musk. On its face, that wasn’t going to stop the Tweets of the Year list. But then Musk, as he tends to do with his companies, started poking around and upending the apple cart.

At multiple times in 2023, it seemed like Musk’s reign over Twitter would cause the company, the user experience, or both to implode. Competitors and re-creations of the Twitter that existed in days gone by popped up (email/DM me if you need an invite code for Bluesky), but Twitter’s place as the single most reactionary and up-to-date social media site hasn’t really changed, even if tons of people, brands, advertisers, and the dignity of diehard users have disappeared.

It’s still where you’re going to see the best text-based social media memes, jokes, and silliness, which forms the heart of my Tweets of the Year list. One last aside: yeah, I still call them tweets and they still appear on Twitter. If you ever see or hear me say “X” unironically, call the authorities, I have been compromised or lobotomized against my will.

Anyway, here are the 50 tweets that I enjoyed the most this year, for reasons both intentionally and very often unintentionally, ranked from 50th down to the best of the best:

(It may take time for your browser to load all the tweets)

(Highly recommend the sound on for that one.)

(Some would quibble that this is more of a TikTok or Reels post, but its pretty clearly the funniest comedy sketch I saw in 2023 and I saw it on Twitter first, so here it’s being honored here.)
